Although service dogs are not required to wear any type of dog apparel identifying them as working dogs, most owners do use vests, cape or harnesses to communicate to the public that their dog is working and should not be distracted.

Service dog vests are typically worn by working dogs to convey their purpose, and to provide additional storage for the owner. Service dog vests are typically made from nylon, but do come in other types of materials. To convey the owner's dog is working, the service dog vest may sport a logo or say something like "Please do not pet. Working service dog"

Another type of service dog apparel is a harness. Service dog harnesses come in two different types. One is for guide dogs. Guide dog harnesses are designed specifically to provide support for their blind owners. They are usually made from leather and have a firm U-shaped handle for easy guiding. Owners also have the option to use a regular leash when they do not need the extra support from the handle.

Mobility harnesses are the second type of service dog harness. These harnesses are for individuals who need help in walking or moving around. The handles on mobility harness are usually wider and shorter than those on guide dog harnesses. This is because the handles on a mobility harness are designed to support the owner's weight, without the risk of injuring the service dog.

Service dog capes are similar to service dog vests, except they are typically smaller and have little to no storage space. The only purpose for a service dog cape really is to identify the dog as a service dog. It can be made from a variety of materials and like a service dog vest, the cape usually displays a logo or service dog message.
